Dr. Zachary Mark Jones presents his research into the Ara Pacis Museum in Rome. The presentation explores the different heritage layers that characterize the complex site within the historic city centre of Rome to identify the various attempts through the project design to relate to its challenging context.

The seminar will present part of an ongoing research project (funded by the Research Council of Finland) that investigates the outcomes of prevailing policy ideals of social inclusion in spatial development. These ideals encounter variations of increasingly financialized urban growth machines. The research project focuses on recently implemented, ongoing, and envisioned waterfront developments in six European cities: Helsinki, Tampere, and Turku (Finland); Stockholm; Copenhagen; and Brussels. Waterfront (re)developments are particularly interesting and contested terrains, as land values are high, the conversions are highly public in character, and ideals of inclusion are at play.

The TUPACH seminar series explores the intersection of cultural heritage and urban development, focusing on how transnational projects engage with UNESCO sites in cities like Naples, Rome, and Venice. Drawing on a set of case studies, the series examines the roles of technical expertise, urban policies, and local communities in heritage preservation, transformation, and valorization. The challenges and frictions of such processes of urban transformation will be discussed.
The TUPACH Research Project, in conjunction with a PNRR PhD Research project, hosts three thematic workshops involving decision makers, experts, and community members to discuss intermediate research findings and develop relevant policy propositions. Each workshop draws on specific case studies from the research project to address one of the three key heritage issues of protection, accessibility, and valorization. Small by-invitation-only sessions (April 8) and a larger public event (April 9) will play a key role in supporting the findings’ validation and helping finalizing policy statements and recommendations regarding heritage protection, accessibility, and valorization. Part of the final research outputs, these statements will provide guidance to urban and heritage decision makers in reinforcing cultural heritage through future projects, while at the same time addressing underlying issues or problems. In addition, the workshops encompass the testing of a technological component meant to assess the opportunities and determine the challenges of using Augmented Reality (AR) to understand and drive transformative urban and architectural projects in heritage-rich areas.
